A solid budget is essential for launching and sustaining a home daycare. By planning your financials carefully, you can reduce stress, manage growth, and ensure your business stays profitable.
Estimate Startup Costs
• Licensing and application fees
• Insurance
• Safety equipment (gates, outlet covers)
• Toys, furniture, learning supplies
• Marketing materials and signage
Monthly Operating Expenses
• Groceries/snacks for children
• Cleaning and hygiene products
• Curriculum or activity costs
• Utility bills (which may increase slightly with kids on-site)
Projected Income
Calculate how many children you can legally care for, then set a competitive monthly rate. Multiply to estimate your gross income. Be realistic—don’t count on full capacity from day one.
Set Aside Emergency Funds
Aim to have at least one month of expenses saved in case of illness, emergency repairs, or a drop in enrollment.
Use Tools and Templates
Our Home Daycare Budget Template helps you map out all your expenses and income so you can easily track financial health month by month.
Adjust and Monitor
Review your budget quarterly and adjust for any changes. Are your grocery bills higher than expected? Are you bringing in enough to break even?
